Google Business Profile: the free tool most owners set up wrong

If you do one marketing thing this month, make it this. Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up in the map and in 'near me' searches, and it's completely free. Most owners claim it, fill in half the fields, and never touch it again. That's leaving money on the table.

Why it matters so much

When someone searches for what you do plus your city, or just searches with location on, Google leans heavily on Business Profiles to decide who shows up in that map pack at the top. For a lot of local searches, that map pack gets more clicks than the website results below it. A complete, active profile is how you land there.

Where most profiles fall short

  • Missing or wrong hours, so customers show up to a closed door.
  • No photos, or one blurry logo, when profiles with real photos get far more clicks.
  • Few or no reviews, and no system for asking happy customers.
  • The wrong category, so you don't show up for the searches that matter.
  • Never posting updates, which Google reads as a sign you're inactive.

What 'set up right' looks like

Complete every field. Pick the most accurate primary category. Add real photos of your work, your team, your storefront. Keep your name, address, and phone identical to what's on your website. And build a habit, ideally automated, of asking satisfied customers for reviews. Reviews are one of the strongest signals there is for local ranking.

I help businesses get their profile dialed in and tie it to their website so the two work together. If yours is half-finished, that's an easy win sitting right there. Reach out and we'll sort it.
